Taskmaster - Marvel’s Super Villian

“ I got this…memory thing. I pick up anyone’s moves just by seein’ ’em. That’s a lotta data. More’n my brain’s got the room for, I guess. So I… forget things. Things that ain’t about combat, about survival. People, places… I can’t remember what I did last week. By Monday, I probably won’t remember this conversation. I wanted ta fight you ’cause… I thought if I remembered your moves, I might remember you. “ — Taskmaster

Short Biography

Taskmaster is a mysterious figure believed to have been born in Brooklyn, New York City. According to him, he has had this ability since childhood. The man who would become the Taskmaster was born a prodigious savant of mnemonic talents a psychiatrist who studied his ability, terming it “photographic reflexes.” Taskmaster has used his talent to become the Marvel Universe’s premier trainer for the criminal world and government.

Since adulthood, he desired to put his ability in a good cause. So he joined S.H.I.E.L.D. and became a SHIELD agent. Sucsussesfully operated many missions.

Once they were assigned to terminate a rogue Nazi scientist developing a Nazi version of Captain America’s super-soldier serum. Tony found the scientist, shot in the chest and slowly dying. Before the scientist died, he gave Tony a syringe containing an experimental Nazi version of the Super-Soldier Serum to enhance the abilities gained through his photographic reflexes. After Tony injected himself with the Nazi Super-Soldier Serum, he began to develop additional powers, set back by the fact that the memories he gained by watching others overwrote his personal memories. As a result, Tony forgot his wife and field agent partner, Mercedes Masters, as well as his own history with S.H.I.E.L.D.

Mercedes, organized an elaborate set-up to help control and guide Tony in his new guise as “Taskmaster“. Using a series of muscle memory and reflexive tasks. She linked Taskmaster to “the Org”: his “handler” between jobs and a constant to keep him on task despite his frequently overwritten memory. The Org was actually Mercedes herself, gathering intelligence and feeding it back to S.H.I.E.L.D. thanks to Taskmaster’s reports. Tony, therefore, became the ultimate double agent and Super Villian.

A costume with tactical body armor, a helmet looks like a skull. That’s what we know so far about his appearance.

TaskMaster as a Villian

He then began a program of observing the fighting techniques of a large number of costumed heroes and villains (using archival television news broadcasts). He decided to use his stolen capital to establish a center for training aspiring criminals to turn into polished professionals. His goal was to become a supplier for criminal organizations around the world.
By hiding behind a costume Taskmaster began to train a large number of thugs at criminal academies he had located around the United States. However, his existence and his training school presence have been revealed when Pernell Solomon of the Solomon Institute used the school’s resources to create a clone of himself and the clone leaked the information to Avengers.

Avengers invaded the premises and Taskmaster held his own against Captain America and Iron Man, however, he was subsequently forced to flee after a confrontation with Jocasta since his lack of experience with Jocasta’s abilities made it impossible to predict the next move.

Taskmaster later established a new training academy in Manhattan, where he battled Spider-Man and Ant-Man, and then escaped. He later used a traveling carnival as a mobile base, where he battled Hawkeye and Ant-Man, and then escaped again. He next trained henchmen for the Black Abbott. Alongside Black Abbott, he battled Spider-Man and Nomad but escaped yet again.

Taskmaster continued to train numerous villains and thugs until the Avengers began to search out and shut down some of his academies across the United States. The taskmaster began to spend more time working as a mercenary in order to make up for the loss of profit.

TaskMaster Power

By Birth – Tony Master has the ability to duplicate other abilities that he either saw someone else performed or watched on T.V. Tony Masters first demonstrated unusual abilities during childhood. After watching a cowboy show on television, he found himself able to duplicate the sophisticated rope tricks he had just watched the cowboy perform.

Enhancement After the Injected by Super Soldier Serum(Nazi Version) – After injecting himself with an offshoot of the Super-Soldier Serum, his brain capacity begin to absorb knowledge instantaneously that unlocked the full potential of his mind’s memory processes. This particular serum was an elaborate modification of the adrenal steroid cortisol, which even enhanced Tony’s short-term memory.

Photographic Reflexes – Whereas the result of Super Soldier Serum Tony enhanced the ability of duplicate. He can watch another person’s physical movements and duplicate them without any practice or training, no matter how complex. However, he typically prefers to use this ability to copy the combat skills, both armed and unarmed, of costumed crime-fighters and expert martial artists from around the world. Uniquely when facing an opponent, he has already studied countless martial arts, and can virtually predict his enemy’s attacks. He can also copy another person’s voice so precisely as to fool voice recognition software although he must practice a voice to ensure he has perfected it enough to fool such devices.

Short Super Human Speed – Tony is capable of running and moving at speeds that are twice as fast as the human body. However, he can only maintain his heightened state for minutes before risking temporarily physical damage to his body.

Can Predict Physical Movement – TaskMaster has the ability to actually predict an opponent’s next move before they make it if he has studied their fighting style enough. But Opponents who are skilled at improvisational fighting styles, or who have a more random unpredictable style like Deadpool are less likely to have their moves predicted by Taskmaster.

High Super Human Reflexes – TasMaster has the reaction speed two times greater than those of a normal human. He can catch a bullet that was fired at him or can deflect it with a chain.

High Agility – Due to Photographic Reflexes TasMaster has the agility comparable with Spider-Man and Daredevil.

Weapon Master – TaskMaster has become a master in all melee weaponry, including swordsmanship from Black Knight and Silver Samurai to the use of Billy Clubs from Daredevil.

Master in Marksmanship – He has the marksmanship of Hawkeye, Punisher, and Bullseye. Tony also has self-marksman skills, making him extremely proficient with throwing projectile weapons, archery, and firearms.

Meditation – TaskMaster learned meditation techniques in Tibet that allow him to slow his breathing and heart rate and survive for extended periods of time without air, this also means that to the untrained eye he will appear to be dead.

TaskMaster Weakness

The Taskmaster is not capable of duplicating a physical movement that requires superhuman ability that is beyond his body strength.
When Taskmaster copies something new, it pushes old memories out of his brain in a form of amnesia.
In extreme situations, he can even forget who he is, what he is doing or why he is doing it.
This also results in him forgetting about people he met, although he can recognize them.

TaskMaster in upcoming Black Widow(2020) Film

It is expected that we will have a chance to see the rising of TaskMaster as a supervillain in the upcoming Black Widow movie. Black Widow ended up her run in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Avengers: Endgame. After finding a way to reverse Thanos’ massacre in Avengers: Infinity War, Natasha and the Earth’s Mightiest Heroes alongside their surviving allies implement a time heist to collect all six Infinity Stones – one of which is the Soul Stone, which required a sacrifice. Natasha decided to ultimately give up her life for the cause. But we expect to see her again in the Black Widow film which will explore a time in her past that hasn’t been covered by MCU yet. That includes possibly squaring off with Taskmaster.
Overall we think it will be fun and exciting to see Black Widow and TaskMaster face to face in upcoming Marvel Phase 4 first movie which is going to premiere on May 1, 2020.
