Switching between heavy programs like Adobe Lightroom Classic and Epic Games Launcher happened smoothly without any problems. Simultaneous download of the game happened without any further controversy, so we decided we should take the Lenovo Legion Y540 i5 9th Generation Review.

The update unit went very well in CPU and GPU bench tests. In a standard PCMark 8 test, the review unit included 5889, which is much higher than the average we have seen before in the same category.

  • Sturdy construction, clean look
  • High performance (including play)
  • Decent audio quality

  • Abysmally short battery life
  • Unusually placed buttons
  • The backports are disturbing

Gambling with the traditional Full HD resolution has been a thrill for the RTX 2060-powered Legion Y540. Doom operated in Ultra graphics settings (the highest in any game, by our definition) with an independent frame rate of 140 frames per second, a figure at the maximum update level limit of 144Hz LCD panel.

The same game in higher graphics settings (the second-highest in any game, by our definition) runs at 141 frames per second, which means there was no difference between the two settings.

The Battlefield V ran at Ultra with an average frame rate of 83 frames per second, but the rate increased by ten frames at the top.

According to Lenovo, the display can handle 300 nits of brightness and produce 72 percent of the colour in the sRGB colour space

In my experience, the display is fun and colourful with web browsing, reading and content usage. In summary, you will not be disappointed with the Legion Y540 display whether you are playing or working.

The sound from the two previously shot Legion Y540 speakers is surprisingly good. A large amount is enough to watch a short video in a quiet bedroom, but it lacks sound.

Lenovo Legion

The Legion Y540, as before, has ports on the sides and back. On the left, we see a USB-A 3.1 port and a single 3.5mm headphone jack. On the right, we see one USB-A 3.1 port. In the background, which is an unpleasant place to have ports, we see a USB-C port, a Mini DisplayPort, a USB-A 3.1 port, a full HDMI port, a LAN port, and a port of power.

The keyboard in the Legion Y540 is a compact bag that holds the keys in it prominent and easy to read but does not go wrong with typing long documents. The flat, white buttons on the back look more aligned to the left than usual due to the number pad.

Also, the keys have low mobility and do not have the right level of resistance. As a result, you end up typing a little worse. That means they get a play job and short texts.

Fans of the RGB background light will be disappointed to see one white colour offered. On the bright side, every key row is including the highest one. Unlike the unit in the previous Legion Y530, the new one has air-conditioning technology on all buttons.

It is a move aimed at promoting the Legion brand over Lenovo. It’s Lenovo’s caption, the low cost of making gamers and potential customers remember the ‘Legion’ better as a typical game symbol.

There is a slight change when you open or close the lid and use the keyboard. Hanging behind the hinges shows far enough that it can be used as a handle, but you may not want to do that unless you are in the habit of living a dangerous life. At 2.3 pounds, the Legion Y540 weighs heavily on the hands. The weight of a portable computer can be felt when you carry it in your pocket or your hands.

Inside, we see a 15.6-inch matte-finish LCD panel with small black bezels on both sides. The bottom bezel is large and sits on a single camera, which is sure to expose your nose to a video call. The display goes back up to 180 degrees, which we don’t get to see on most gaming laptops.

The Legion Y540 enjoys a clean look and solid construction of its price point. I just wish the top cover was metal in construction. Lenovo has directly designed the new Legion series to look quiet and down to the crowd of other gaming machines, and I think the Legion Y540 is successful in doing just that.

In the Lenovo Vantage app integrated into Windows 10, an option is called Hybrid Mode, which allows the laptop to use an integrated Intel graphics card when operating on a battery. You are using an internal graphics card instead of an Nvidia chip dedicated to energy saving.

Therefore, while performing the above tests with Hybrid Mode off, I also used the update unit turned on. The battery loses about 24 percent of the total charge in half an hour, which may be slightly better. Also, I noticed stutters in window animations from time to time. In summary, the Legion Y540 is not for you if you expect to work without being fired for hours.

Our Verdict

The Lenovo Legion Y540 is a well-designed, neat, and versatile laptop that makes its predecessors proud. Suppose you are in the market for a gaming laptop. The Legion Y540 can drive new AAA degrees with an astonishing level of ease and ease. Its features include excellent sound quality, clean body composition, and a responsive touchpad.
